Stage 1

Stage 1

Highlighted Stage 1 works areas illustrated above.

The objective of Stage 1 is to upgrade access and egress at Royal Randwick by separating the current commingling of modes of access/egress.  These works will have obvious benefits to members, their guests and customers as well as the local community.

Stage 1 works are currently under construction and are expected to be completed by Spring 2009, phased to minimise business impacts.

The Stage 1 works include the following major components:

High Street Connection

High Street Connection

The internal service road, connecting the High Street entry (near the UNSW) to the main drive is being upgraded, generally to the area where the RNSW Laboratory is located.  This initiative will allow floats to enter and exit the site avoiding the main drive entry on race days.

Oaks Drive

Oaks Drive

A taxi roadway will be constructed providing a contemporary taxi solution connecting Doncaster Avenue to Ascot Street.  The taxi way will operate in a similar manner to the Sydney Airport taxi facility.  It is envisaged that the efficiency of the race day taxi service will measurably improve as a consequence of these works, as will safety and amenity.

Approximately 25-30% of patrons arrive/depart by taxi on major race days.

Day Stalls

Day Stalls

A Race Day Stall and Swabbing complex will be constructed to the rear of the Leger Lawn. Access for floats will be via the upgraded High Street connection, removing the current access through Alison Road.

Buses & Pedestrians

Buses & Pedestrians

A new bus plaza entry will be constructed for use on major race days to take the bus traffic off Alison Road on to the site, improving efficiency, safety and amenity for both arrival and departure.

Approximately 30% of patrons arrive/depart by bus on major race days.
